The IC-R6SPORT handheld receiver is a wideband receiver with an ultra wide frequency range that covers frequencies from 100 kHz - 1309.995 MHz while the radio provides superior sensitivity and receiver characteristics that are not susceptible to interference. The IC-R6 can pick up amateur stations, AM, FM, short wave broadcasts, TV audio* and a variety of utility communications. This radio is also capable of high speed scanning at speeds of 100 channels per second.

- With 1,300 alphanumeric memory channels, 50 scan edges, and 200 auto write memories, the IC-R6 allow for flexible scanning, and the bank link feature allows any of the 22 banks to connect with each other
- The Voice Squelch Control (VSC) opens the squelch only when a modulated signal is detected and ignores unmodulated beat noise; ideal for users scanning for talk, news, and music but not data bursts or beacons
- Can be powered using rechargeable Ni-MH cells, alkaline batteries, the AC adapter (BC-196S), or the cigarette lighter cable (CP-18); the optional drop-in charger (BC-194) eliminates the need to connect a source to the DC power jack
